Dev Log 10 (Alpha)

During the week of our Alpha Playtest, we finalised some game details. But before that, we wrote ten questions that we would ask our 17 playtesters and included an area for additional feedback. However, during the playtest, we paid close attention to the participant’s moves, what they said aloud while playing, and which areas they got stuck on (if any).

In preparation for this week, Tom (https://grumtom.itch.io/) added a Tutorial room (a place to practice casting spells) and some text to indicate what the player should do (as a temporary placeholder for the tutorial section). Tom also added a menu screen and pause screen so that the participants could navigate between tutorial sections, the playable level, and the home screen. Additionally, Tom composed and recorded a piece of music for the game.

Stephen (https://stephenrockett.itch.io/) finalised the controller design and exported the parts of the controller individually so that they would be able to be 3D printed. Getting in contact with John Walsh (Head of TU Dublin School of Creative Arts) allowed the controller to become a reality.

Some positive feedback we received back (to note for the final production of the game):

  1. Likes mixing and matching different spell combinations.
  2. All the elements felt unique and useful.
  3. Enjoyed the level of difficulty.

Some suggestions from the playtesters:

  1. Increase movement speed.
  2. Add a tutorial.
  3. Add more spells (Ice, shadow, knockback).
  4. Make the water spell faster than the player.
