Dev Log 2
Dev Log 2
During our second week, we worked on adding the previously suggested ideas and adding new features to the two games. For this week, I created a completely new and redesigned controller. Even though we will not be using the Mars Rover game as the final product, I felt it was necessary to add in the suggestions from the previous week to let the player focus purely on the experience with the new controller. So, I added a rock counter for the pick-ups, changed the rotation mode from incremental to gradual, increased the speed, added reverse, and boosted speed. Additions to the top-down game include adding an entire spell-casting system and adding some custom terrain.
Custom Controller Demo Prototype Rotation Based Controller with v2 of 'Mars Rock Sample Recovery'
Some positive feedback we received back (to note for the final production of the game):
- The players found the new custom controller very cool and fun to use. Overall, the players found the redesign unique, and no one had seen anything similar.
- The players also liked the movement required to input selections for the new controller (the need to push in and pull out to select and deselect inputs).
- The players liked using and casting spells in the top-down game and the movement.
Some suggestions that the players suggested:
- Make the controller more sturdy as some players found they intentionally tried not to break the controller, which took away from the experience.
- The controller should be slightly larger and not need to be held with a second hand when using it.
- Add in enemies or things to aim at for the top-down game.
